winter weather makes me think about storm sailing. when in the library last week i saw the book Adlard Coles’ Heavy Weather Sailing, 6th ed., by Peter Bruce. written for ocean sailors, the information is still helpful for smaller coastal, inland and lake trailer sailors. overall the book is well written with examples and summaries based on real boats in real conditions.
i have always been of the opinion that keeping a safe amount of sail raised for as long as possible makes for a safer and more comfortable experience. the book supports this theory. the book also outlines the limitations of roller-reefing headsails because of poor shape as the sail size is reduced.
i recommend the book for all to review.
